The European Long-term Ecosystem Research Network successfully established. Long term ecological and socioeconomic research meets the challenges of Global Change.

The Long-term Ecosystem Research Network (LTER-Europe) was founded in Balatonfüred, Hungary on the 15th of June. Representatives of 14 European countries met to discuss and to decide on a roadmap for improving the quality of life of all European citizens through the application of long term, large scale research into the prevention and sustainable use of ecosystems.

The urgent need to establish this network of scientists and sites across Europe was triggered by the growing impact of Global Change on Europe’s ecosystems, being our general basis for economy, human health and the general security of Europe´s societies.

The general goals are to foster collaboration and coordination among long-term ecosystem researchers and research networks at local, regional, continental and global scale. The network improves comparability of data and research results from sites across Europe and facilitates exchange and preservation of these data. LTER-Europe delivers information not only to scientists but also to policymakers and the public.

Additionally the network facilitates education in a broad sense.

The establishment of LTER-Europe was one important success of the Network of Excellence ALTER-NET within the 6th framework of European research.

Michael Mirtl from Austria was elected Chair and Kinga Kauze from Poland Vice-Chair of the Network. “We urgently need a comprehensive view of what happens in Europeans Ecosystems. The scattered activities and information must be brought together for syntheses”, Mirtl said.

Climate Change effects on Ecosystems will be one focus in the near future.
